Anyone add to their preps over the last few days?
Anyone care to share any thoughts, concerns, or anything else ...?
I realize some people are not happy with me because of some things that have happened over the last couple of days. I can't explain why we have to do certain things, but everything is resolved.

Hi Albert,
I am adding my 10th 55 gal drum today. I don't think I will ever have enough water stored. I think you do a great job here on this site. I am a member on several different types of discussion boards and this one seems to run the most smoothly. Stay with it, we need you!!!! |

Hi Albert. I haven't got much done this week with stepson moving in but we went and cashed in our cans and I will take that money to put towards more preps. I think you do a great job with the site. Don't let a select few get you down. |

I already posted this link on a previous entry but I really swear by using this site. Shows the best deals in each grocery store in every state and is updated weekly. Great for prepping.
http://www.couponmom.com/index.php?cid=4 Each week I buy 1 24 pk of bottled water ($4.00) and spend about $5-$7 on preps. That doesn't sound like alot but I buy the stuff that is on sale, use coupons & for $5 I can get for example 10 pkgs raman noodles, 4 cans of baked beans, 3 boxes of mac & cheese & 1 box of cereal or oatmeal. I grocery shop once a week and I've really just started prepping in the past few months but I have a supply I am quite proud of! |

Spoke to my broker just now who is a single parent. He is also ex-military, so more willing to listen than most. After a 5 minute "speel" he asked me to send him as much info as possible. He has another client, a lawyer working for the federal govt. who is prepping fpr a year. I seem to have more success with friends and strangers than with family! Arrrrrrgh!
I'm working right now on my "prep" books: Recipes, manual for running the household, first Aid esp. BF related with detailed de-con instructions.

Thanks to ALL of you. I have learned what I may need for water. Getting water is no problem for us but having clean water might be.
I ordered a berkly filter and a katadyn filter, the one that does 13,000 gallons. Will also purchase plain calcium hypochlirite, this will easier to store than gallons of bleach and I can share it with others.
The 200 N-95 masks, gowns, face shields, head covering and shoe covers finally came in. I cannot sit around if someone else needs help but want to be able to protect myself and husband.
From you I also learned what we need and what is available for outside security.
Ordered 6 motion senser, solar powered flood lights--40 small battery operated window/door alarms--2 wireless intercoms--10 battery operated motion sensor alarms-another 400 watt converter to run baby monitor in shed---string and a whole lot of nails.
I am getting there !!!
Thank you ALL
God bless

Great work Albert! Hopefully that guy is gone.
We continue to add the basics and fine tune supplies, investments, and equipment. The major stuff is complete and now we have time to focus on a lot of the small stuff.
It is a very comfortable feeling once you get over the hump.

Hi Albert....I've never been on a forum before.Obviously you have a lot of issues to deal with.....thank you. I really enjoy being here....maybe too much because I still have yesterday's dishes in the sink. I read the site over coffee in the morning before work and it's the first place I come to as soon as I get home.
I have an organization problem. I read how "together" so many people are on this site, it's wonderful. They're canning, jarring, & making recipe books etc.. I read the site, get nervous, buy "stuff" and put it in my basement. This isn't working too well. I don't know when I bought what or how much time I've actually prepped for. So, after I go shopping today for more " stuff " I need to put together a plan. Any ideas?

Yah-buddy! Good job Brian.
I appreciate the support everybody. It also seems like we might need to create a fine-tuned prep list. A list of the preps that you buy after the essential preps are completed i.e. flood lights, generators, personal investments, saying good bye to your loved ones LOL.

I broke it down in order of priority--water, food ,shelter, protection, comfort.
Then made lists (A lot of which came from this forum) under each heading.
Decided what I would need for 1 month--3 months, -6 months, -one year 18 months.
Obtained everything I needed to live for 1 month and then added to what my needs would be for the next.
I simply cannot function unless I have it organized. I sometimes think my biggest fear, about this threat, is not to be organized.
Keep list of every thing you buy. Mark it off once that goal is achieved.
God bless

I agree. Start with the basics. Buy rice, noodles and beans by bulk. You may need to hold out for as long as possible. Also start storing water.... I heard that people have had success using empty 2 liter bottles for storing water.

I just use a Sharpie. I put the date I bought it. Because I'm not the most organized either I also put the expiration date on it with the sharpie. It makes it easier for me to know when to rotate. I find canning jars on Craigslist.com really cheap. They are good for food storage and making candles in, etc. I get #10 cans of dried foods (beans, rice, grain, sugar, oats, pasta, flour, dry milk, dry carrots, dry onions, etc) at the local LDS storehouse. It is really inexpensive, for example, 25lbs of grain is $4.75. If you want it canned it is $1.99 for a #10 can, which weighs about 6lbs. Don't forget the dollar store for toiletries. I also clean out hotel rooms when travelling!, great to use in BOB's. |

That was my only prep for y2k. I never regretted it. This is definately not a y2k crisis so I have water everywhere I can. Definately yes to the 2 liter bottles but the root beer ones retain the flavor. I didn't like it but I am kind of finicky. If I get terribly thirsty though, I don't think that flavor will a priority. Someone recommended adding a little bleach. Here is the link to that post: http://www.avianflutalk.com/forum_posts.asp?TID=963&KW=bleach |

This is how my night is going....I think I better move some stuff in my basement!
* UNTIL 4 AM EDT THURSDAY
* THUNDERSTORMS WITH EXCESSIVE RAINFALL OVER 2 INCHES IN AN HOUR WILL OCCUR AT SOME LOCATIONS DURING THE OVERNIGHT. THIS WILL CAUSE FLOODING OF STREAMS...CREEKS ROADS AND EVEN BASEMENTS. * SOME AREAS HAVE HAD HEAVY RAINFALL IN THE LAST 24 HOURS AND THE GROUND IS SATURATED. |

Hi All,
TrishaA welcome! After I come in from shopping, I take my receipts to the pc and log-in what I purchased and the category it is (fruit, grains, dairy, deserts, entrees, veggies, fruits etc.) That way I can sort by category to look up how much I have.
I also log in how many servings per container and where it is stored. UB = under bed, BS1 = bedroom shevling unit/shelf 1; etc. so I can find it when I want to use it. Maybe this will work for you too.
Rapture -- how did the basement reorg go? I hope you don't get flooded.

Great suggestions...came back from shopping and labeled everything with todays date....I'm going to try to organize a little each day...writing down expiration dates so I can see them easily. My son offered to help me get it all on the pc.......thanks, it's a good start.

Im getting paranoid.I keep hearing about sick birds/chickens etc EXAMPLE
i found a pigeon flopping around and stuggeling in the barn. Once it quit flopping around it was constantaly turning its head around and blinking its eyes.
I noticed my barred rock hen limping. She was eating and drinking at first, but after a day or so, she stopped. After about 3 days she was dead
see what I mean

It's hard not to be paranoid. Are you on the east coast? BUT remember, the farmer in Canada said his birds were walking funny and then died. But they DIDN'T have H5N1, only the H5. That might be the case with your hen or maybe something completely different and benign. Are your local officials going to test them? I hope it all comes out positive. Keep us updated. Let us know if you need anything.

Hello everyone! Well I got slammed with water, wind and lightning! Salmon were spawning in my yard! I had cut up 55 gallon drums before to hold rain water and I am happy to report they work......
The power went out so I cracked open some preps and the kids were happy to eat canned ravioli.
I have lived here for 6 years and it has never flooded this bad. My biggest concern was my basement flooding...so I was checking it all the time. We have more flooding coming tonight. I think my beautiful garden is gone.....makes me sick!

_________________________________________________ RatureReady...Smoke those salmon, seal them with your food saver, and add them to with your preps! Actually, we do a lot of salmon fishing (trolling with down-riggers), and always have lots of smoked salmon. And salmon steaks, fillets, etc. So I couldn't resist when I saw your post. Even tonight we are having "baked salmon - on a bed of crisp romaine - with sliced red onions - and a poppy seed dressing. UGH...salmon, salmon, salmon! Oh, but the crab is different, I could eat that everyday! Sadly, we won't have much salmon or crab over the winter because of the gas prices. It really costs too much to take the boat out much. |

Raptureready, I have to admit it is really good on bagels with cream cheese. My friend made a spread with some I gave her, and canned it. Gave me a jar, it was great. I would be happy to send you some smoked salmon, as soon as I get more, probably within a month. It'll make a great prep. I give a lot of it away. My husband just likes to catch it and gets tons more than we need, or could eat for that matter! He likes smoking it too. Has two big smokers, his 'secret' marinade, and special smoky wood chips? It's a guy thing! It ships easy too. I seal it with my foodsaver, and it lasts for a long time. We just got rid of the last of the smoked that was left over from last season, and are getting low on the what's left in the freezer, so time to go get more! We were just talking about it. Last season we got a few Kings over 35 pounds, and the silvers were averaging about 15 pounds each. We get so much that even though we give a lot away we are able to keep enough for the year. Last year we went camping and had to give away about 30 dungee crabs to our camping neighbors because we didn't have space to take it all home with us. The whole campsite smelled delicious. Plus we got some really nice wine and beer out of the deal! Okay, I'll go on and on...I really like hanging on the boat. BUT as soon as I get some more I will let you know and get info then to send you some. Promise! OOhh, and on Saturday we are going to a farm and getting all the berries for winter! I'm making myself hungry! I gotta stop! |
