Where can I buy bulk dry food in the South?

I've been looking for a business in the South East, to buy long term storable foods from because I think I would save a bundle on shipping. Shipping from Texas or Utah can get pretty pricey, so I've never taken the plunge to buy a lot of dried foods in #10 cans and Super Pails.  I make due with supermarket foods, but rotating everything to keep a fresh supply can get tedious after a  while. If I could find a business in VA or NC or WV or even Kentucky I could drive there to pick up my order and save myself a bundle in shipping costs.  And I wouldn't have to worry so much about rotation, plus buying locally helps local business owners which is a good thing too.
 
Does anyone know of any reputable dealers in the South or South East?  I'm in VA and I don't know of any one who sells long term storage here.  Thanks in advance Smile

I live in the Southeast, have ordered from Honeyville several times, and received my orders in less than a week.  I've also seen good recommendations for the Bulk Foods Company, located at  http://www.bulkfoods.com. Shipping is free but they charge a packing fee of $4.95 for any size order.

I've ordered a few specialty grains from Honeyville Grain in the past and always been very satisfied with their products.  The one time they got part of my order wrong I called them up and they priority mailed the correct item that same day. It arrived 2 days later in excellent condition.  They are really a super company to work with.  I had forgotten they sell some stuff in # 10 cans.  I'll have to do some price comparisons.
 
I've ordered from Bulk Foods too.  I usually get my powdered egg from them because they tend to be the cheapest.  They don't taste too bad either if prepared the right way (http://free.prohosting.com/hbhw/eggsnbacon.htm).  Their TVP is pretty good too.  It's unflavored, but the color more closely resembles ground beef and my family prefers their TVP dark brown as opposed to light tan.  Helps with the visual presentation.  They swear it tastes better too, but I can't tell the difference between the two.

I often buy bulk foods from United Grocers Cash and Carry.  They supply restaurants and such and always have 25 to 50 pound bags of ruce, oatmeal, beans, etc. for a reasonable price.  Some items may be found cheaper at COSTCO, United Grocers is always a good place to look.
 
You may see a sign saying that they only sell to companys, but I have never had a problem buying stuff from them.  Just remember to take cash, they don't accept personal checks.

I just did a search and it looks like the Casn & Carry  stores may not be back east.
 
It shouldn't be hard, though, to find bulk foods if you don't need it in cans.  Most large grocery stores that have bulk foods in bins will also sell it by the bag if you just take a couple of minutes to track down the manager of that section.  When buying by the bag, I have also always gotten a price that was better (by the pound) than the "bin" price.
 
Also, COSTCO aways seems to have a pretty good selection of bagged bulk foods to choose from.

Check your yellow pages for a restaurant supply store. Most decent sized cities have at least one and you get great prizes, plus a lot of product you normally don't find.

I too have looked for a place in the south that sells bulk food.  I am in  SC  no luck at all.  I ordered my dried eggs and  tvp from  honeville and received them in 5 days as well.  let me know if you find any where pam

Another food that has a long-term shelf-life is MREs.  MREs are precooked food items that require no rehydration to eat; they can even be eaten cold in necessary.  Thus, they are very convenient to prepare and eat.  MRE food items are vacuum sealed within a very durable pouch to help extend the product's shelf life.
