Seventy chicken found dead at Vasco

Press Trust of India

Panaji, February 24, 2006

Around seventy chicken were found dead in Baina locality of Vasco town
30 kms from Panaji on Thursday evening, with the state authorities ruling
out that the deaths were due to bird flu.

"Initial reports are clear that the mortality is due to dacillary white
diarrohea and stress due to change in climate," animal husbandry
minister Fransisco Pacheco said.
The animal husbandry department swung into action after 70 chicken
were found dead at the backyard of five houses in Baina locality of Vasco
town, he said.

Two different veterinary officers -- one attached to local unit and another
to disease investigating unit at Panaji conducted postmortem of the dead
chicken and have ruled out bird flu, the minister said.
"There are cases of mortality this time of the year due to change in
climate," he said adding, that the samples of birds have been sent to Pune
laboratory.

"We have kept strict watch on the place where the incident occurred,"
Pacheco said.
