We have plenty of deer here also, but I would not want to eat one unless I had no other choice. We have chronic wasting disease here(a deer version of mad cow disease). I used to eat a lot of venison as a child, but since you cannot tell the deer is ill in the initial stages of the disease, I wouldn't trust the meat.

chonic wasting disease? eew! Haven't heard that we have that here, at least yet, and our deer are definately fat and sassy... still that is sure something to think about - thx!
Guess if it looked healthy would eat it if ran out of cows (no, not worried about "mad cow" - we've never fed protein blocks. ) Would much rather kill and eat a deer rather than an elk or moose, really just out of sentiment.
Well, there's always rattlesnake - have an abundance- but .

Ara - you are absolutely right - . We're calving too, and I love to watch them run around and buck etc starting even when they are so _very_ little! Alia Nature is not always just "red in tooth and claw"
